Digital Marketing for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

A few months ago, I had no idea what a conversion funnel was. I thought “organic reach” meant something to do with vegetables. And “impressions”? I just thought it was something actors talked about.

Fast forward to now, and digital marketing has completely changed the way I think about the internet. If you’re a beginner trying to figure out where to even start, this post is for you.

Let’s break it all down — simply and practically.

So, What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is any form of marketing that happens online. That includes social media posts, Google ads, email newsletters, YouTube videos, blog articles, influencer collaborations — all of it. If it lives on the internet and promotes a product, service, or brand, it’s digital marketing.

The reason it’s so powerful? Everyone is online. Billions of people use the internet every day, which means the potential to reach your audience has never been bigger. And unlike traditional marketing (TV, billboards, print), digital marketing is trackable, measurable, and often much more affordable.

The Main Channels of Digital Marketing

You don’t need to master all of these at once — but it helps to understand what’s out there.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Getting your website to rank on Google without paying for ads. It’s a long-term strategy that builds sustainable, free traffic over time. (I’ve got a whole post on SEO if you want to dive deeper!)

2. Social Media Marketing Using platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), or Facebook to build an audience, share content, and engage with potential customers. Every platform has its own style and audience, so strategy matters.

3. Content Marketing Creating valuable content — blogs, videos, podcasts, infographics — that attracts and educates your target audience. The goal is to provide so much value that when people need a product or service you offer, you’re the first name they think of.

4. Email Marketing Still one of the highest ROI channels in digital marketing. Building an email list lets you speak directly to people who’ve already shown interest in what you do. No algorithm in the way.

5. Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC) Paid ads on Google, Instagram, Facebook, etc. You pay every time someone clicks your ad. It delivers fast results but requires a budget and strategy to make it profitable.

6. Affiliate Marketing Promoting someone else’s product and earning a commission for every sale you drive. Great for bloggers and content creators building passive income streams.

Where Should a Beginner Start?

Honestly? Pick one or two channels and go deep rather than spreading yourself thin across all of them.

If you’re building a personal brand or portfolio site (like I am), I’d recommend starting with:

  • SEO + Blogging — Builds long-term traffic and establishes you as an expert
  • One Social Media Platform — Pick where your audience spends time and show up consistently there

You don’t need to be on every platform. You need to be really good on a few.

The Skills That Will Always Be Valuable

Regardless of which channel you focus on, there are some core skills every digital marketer needs:

  • Copywriting — The ability to write words that persuade and connect. This applies everywhere — ads, emails, social posts, landing pages.
  • Data Analysis — Understanding your metrics: traffic, click-through rates, bounce rates, conversions. Data tells you what’s working.
  • Basic Design Sense — You don’t need to be a designer, but knowing what looks good and using tools like Canva can go a long way.
  • Adaptability — Digital marketing changes fast. Algorithm updates, new platforms, shifting consumer behaviour — the best marketers stay curious and keep learning.

The Mindset Shift You Need

Here’s what took me a while to understand: digital marketing isn’t about selling to people — it’s about solving problems for people. The brands and creators that win are the ones who genuinely add value, build trust, and show up consistently.

Stop thinking “how do I get people to buy?” and start thinking “how do I help people so well that buying from me becomes obvious?”

That shift changes everything.

Final Thoughts

Digital marketing can feel overwhelming at first — there’s so much to learn. But the best thing you can do is start. Build something. Write something. Post something. Learn from it. Iterate.

That’s exactly what I’m doing here on AryanGrows.com — learning in public, sharing what I discover, and growing one step at a time. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.
