What Is SEO and Why Does It Matter?

Let’s be real — when was the last time you clicked to page 2 of Google? Probably never. And that’s exactly why SEO matters.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of improving your website so that it shows up higher in search engine results. It’s not magic, it’s not a hack, and it definitely doesn’t happen overnight. But when done right, it’s one of the most powerful tools in your digital marketing arsenal.

What Does SEO Actually Do?

Think of Google as a giant library. When someone types a query into the search bar, Google’s job is to find the most relevant, trustworthy, and helpful content available. SEO is how you tell Google: “Hey, my content deserves to be on that first page.”

There are three core pillars of SEO:

1. On-Page SEO This is everything you do on your actual website — your content, headings, keywords, images, and internal links. If someone searches “best digital marketing tips for beginners” and your blog post is packed with genuinely helpful info on that exact topic, Google is more likely to show it.

2. Off-Page SEO This refers to actions taken outside your website that impact your ranking — primarily backlinks. When other reputable websites link to your content, Google sees it as a vote of confidence. The more quality backlinks you have, the more authority your site builds.

3. Technical SEO This covers the behind-the-scenes stuff: how fast your website loads, whether it works well on mobile, if it’s secure (HTTPS), and how easy it is for Google’s bots to crawl and index your pages. A beautiful website with slow load times will still struggle to rank.


Keywords: The Foundation of SEO

At the heart of every SEO strategy is keyword research. Keywords are the words and phrases people type into Google. Your job is to figure out what your target audience is searching for and create content around those terms.

Here’s a quick tip: don’t go after massive keywords like “digital marketing” right away. Instead, focus on long-tail keywords — longer, more specific phrases like “how to start digital marketing as a beginner in 2025.” They have lower search volume but much less competition, making it easier for a newer site like mine to rank.

Free tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest, or AnswerThePublic are great starting points for finding the right keywords.


Content Is Still King

You’ve probably heard this phrase a hundred times — but it holds up. Google’s algorithm is constantly evolving, and its ultimate goal is to reward content that genuinely helps users. That means:

  • Writing in-depth, well-structured articles
  • Answering questions your audience is actually asking
  • Updating old content to keep it fresh and accurate
  • Using headings (H1, H2, H3) to organize your content clearly

A good rule of thumb: write for humans first, optimize for search engines second.


Don’t Forget the Basics

A few quick wins that can make a big difference:

  • Meta titles and descriptions — These are what users see on the search results page. Make them compelling and keyword-rich.
  • Image alt text — Always describe your images using relevant keywords. It helps with accessibility and SEO.
  • Internal linking — Link to other pages within your website to help Google understand your site structure and keep readers engaged longer.
  • Mobile optimization — Over 60% of searches happen on mobile. If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re already behind.

SEO Is a Long Game — And That’s Okay

Here’s something nobody tells beginners: SEO takes time. You won’t see results in a week. Most websites take 3–6 months to start gaining meaningful organic traffic. But the payoff is worth it — unlike paid ads, organic traffic keeps coming without you spending more money.

The key is consistency. Keep creating valuable content, keep learning, and keep optimizing. Every blog post, every tweak, every backlink is a building block.
